The Bratislava City Gallery Library is a specialized library that collects, catalogs, preserves, protects, and makes available publications and documents in the fields of the theory and history of fine arts, architecture, applied arts, and restoration, as well as philosophy, aesthetics, history, and education.
Work on the library began as soon as the gallery was founded, when it was still housed in the Primatial Palace. In 1975, the gallery and library were moved to the Mirbach Palace. The library, which started with 453 items, currently offers nearly 15,000 books, exhibition catalogs, and other types of documents to both professionals and the interested public. It serves as an information and documentation resource for GMB staff members. The library also includes a collection of clippings and excerpts on over 3,000 figures from the Slovak art world, which is the result of the work of the GMB Documentation Department since 1961.
Loans are provided to external users on-site in the reading room during opening hours, unless otherwise agreed. All lending services are free of charge.
Upon request, the library conducts research using the information sources and databases at its disposal.
Online catalogue of the GMB library
The catalog allows users to search by various criteria—author, title, and keywords. Users can also see whether and where a document is located, and whether it is currently checked out. Registered readers can reserve and renew books online, as well as view their reader accounts.
