The Archive of Hidden Meanings

They programmatically use the expressive possibilities of analogue, mostly black-and-white photography, which underlines the seriousness associated with historical records and archives while accentuating the transience of what is present in the image and what remains absent, impossible to capture. Given the different context, the artists´ approach to specific issues of documentary photography differs. Their photographs contribute to the formation of collective subconscious and cultural memory, and yet their individual artistic contribution is indisputable. Dias and Huszár are superstars among photographers. Their cycles of images showing significant events and (not only) political elites are well-known and highly rated. Dias seeks to capture the events in their changing dynamics, whether in whole or in detail, while Huszár is betting on the expressive power of portrayed people, often members of marginalised groups. Golisová´s images of her peers from the artistic community have the character of an intimate dialogue. They radiate a silent protest against the requirements and speed of the period. All displayed images capture the mood and atmosphere of the transformation of society and individuals and always come with a point, which is the quality that draws us into the scene with the same intensity as on the day of the origin of individual images.

The exhibition has been prepared by Milota Havránková Foundation in line with the foundation´s concept, which is directed at supporting the presentation of photographic works not only of established but also of emerging artists.
