Endre Nemes
was born in 1909 in Pécsvárad. (His family name was Nágel). His childhood years were spent in Levoča and Spišská Nová Ves. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Prof. Willi Nowak. In 1938 Nemes emigrated away from fascism to Finland and from 1940 on, he lived in Sweden where he became an important personality. He was the Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Göteborg, awarded the title Knight of the Royal Order Vasa, and his artworks may been seen in the Swedish parliament. A number of monographs on him have been published and films about him produced. He has had exhibitions in prestigious international galleries and museums. His characteristic works have surrealistic components that are permeated with a variety of motifs in one figure. In the 1950s, his works were filled with non-figurative elements. He died in 1985 in Stockholm.
A retrospective exhibition mapping his individual periods and most important works will be presented thanks to loans of works by the Endre Nemes Museum in Pécs (Hungary), the Nemes family as well as private collectors.
